Between Clarcona and Oakland, the 13.6 mile stretch of the West Orange Trail that centers on Winter Garden is also part of the statewide Coast to Coast Trail. Cons: if you’re a serious cyclists there are too many slow sections (through town) and intersections to post a solid effort, two sketchy areas where it wouldn’t be wise to get off your bike, crowded in parts (not dangerously though-folks we passed were respectful and moved to the right), the northeast end of the trail was not well marked and we couldn’t figure out if we were lost or the trail had ended. Though there have been a couple of minor incidents in the past, the South Apopka area of the West Orange Trail is being well maintained so there are no glass problems and also Apopka police have had bike patrols that have eliminated any problems with the locals. I saw so many beautiful surprises; peacock ¿, a snake slithering pass my bike ¿, etc. Road crossings are many and do keep in mind that few drivers in Central Florida believe in stopping for anything but a vehicle bigger than their own, inline skaters don't qualify. We saw a chicken crossing, where the local rooster was doing just that, checking on all the chicks in the area, crossing from one side of the road to the other. The trail runs 3 more miles along North Park Avenue before ending at the northern trailhead on East Welch Road. There was no parking so we had to park at the nearby Publix which has good restrooms. Go West to Clermont for a "hilly" 28 mile ride. The paved trail passes through downtown Oakland, Winter Garden, and Apopka with most of its length built on old railroad alignments. It is about 6 miles in from the western end of the trail. Trails throughout the entire state are open for riding at the current time. Heading into Clermont was definitely a lot more challenging but it was still a great ride. In a year of riding this trail have never had a problem with any safety issues. And we had a blast! THE WEST ORANGE TRAIL HAS A PHASE 4. We had similar bad advice about taking the extension that goes to Lake Mineola. This trail is so close to Disney World, you could even spend part of a day in the park and part of a day on the trail. Then crossing at 441 is a pain. The trail has a very slight incline for over 2 miles. The Killarney end of WOT is clearly the better end as you will ride directly through Winter Garden and some very nice picturesque areas. BONUS ALERT, I had not seen this mentioned in any other postings but if you ride another 3.75 miles straight ahead North/past the end of the "official" end of the trail, which is Welch Road, up to Kelly Park Road, turn right, go 200 yards, turn left, go 100 yards, enter Kelly Park. The Winter Garden / Minneola area, ranks with the Dunedin / Tarpon Springs area as my favorite. There’s a nice bike rental shop at that end. It is a very relaxing, fun trail, good for exercise. The West Orange portion of the trail is well maintained and very clean except some eyesores in the Apoka area. Some sections were not labeled well either.
